Beltway Hot Lanes

Virginia is starting construction of the Route 495 HOT lanes, high occupancy toll lanes that can be used by cars with fewer than three passengers by paying a toll. The lanes are designed to reduce traffic congestion and produce better traffic flow. Also, Route 95 express lanes will be built 20 miles south of DC to help the daily commuter traffic. With private transportation financing, the public will benefit from a better road network. The problem is that Maryland will not expand Route 95 or 495 on its side so when the traffic goes over the American Legion or the WW bridge, traffic jams will occur. Road, railroad, port, or mass transit infrastructure projects can benefit from private financing since our government cannot adequately fund these projects. Our national transportation infrastructure is key to economic development and our standard of living. I would suggest that our elected officials stop spending money on non-essential personal pet projects and start taking care of our infrastructure.
